Boost Your Instagram Engagement
Over the past year I’ve seen significant growth on my Instagram profile, especially through carousel posts. These results didn’t come from luck – they came from experimenting, analysing and understanding what my audience reacts to. And while I can’t promise that what works for me will work for everyone, I want to share the strategies that have consistently improved my reach and engagement.

Start With Two Essential Questions
Before I create any post, especially a carousel, I always ask myself:
What can I give the viewer?
Why should they stop scrolling to look at my post?
If the first image in the carousel doesn’t answer those two questions clearly, the viewer will simply move on. That first frame is everything – it has to capture attention, spark interest and make people curious about what comes next.
Using the AIDA Model to Shape Each Post
I rely heavily on the classic AIDA model:
A – Attention
I – Interest
D – Desire
A – Action
For Instagram, the first two – Attention and Interest – are by far the most important. I work in a niche that mixes photography, travel, landscapes and nature, so my goal with the opening slide is always to grab attention visually and immediately create interest in the story or value I’m about to share.
Adding Text to the First Image
For a long time, I avoided putting text directly on my images. I worried it would make my feed look messy. (And honestly – it can look messy if you’re not careful.) But once I tested it properly, I learned that text can dramatically increase engagement.
Here’s what has worked for me:
Keep the text clear, simple and easy to read.
Use a calm, clean background so the text stands out.
Make sure there’s strong contrast: dark text on a light image and vice versa.
Don’t write too much on the image – the caption below the post can hold the longer explanations.
Some creators alternate between text slides and clean photo slides to keep their grid more balanced. It’s a personal preference, but it can help if you want structure without sacrificing engagement.
Standing Out on the Explore Page
Most of my best-performing posts reach people through Instagram’s Explore page. That means users first see my post as a tiny thumbnail surrounded by hundreds of others. Because of that, your first image must work at a very small scale.
What helps me:
Keep it visually calm or visually striking (avoid clutter).
Choose something intriguing enough to make people tap.
Make sure the text (if any) is readable even in miniature.
Once people open the post, then the carousel needs to keep them there.
The Power of Desire: What Happens After Slide One
Slides 2–20 serve one main purpose: Desire.
Every next image should create a small curiosity gap: “I wonder what the next photo looks like?” The more viewers swipe, the longer they stay on the post – and Instagram rewards that by pushing the content further.
One trick that has worked extremely well for me is adding EXIF data under each image: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and a small icon showing which camera and lens I used. Photography lovers are naturally curious, so they begin checking every slide to see how each image was shot.
This increases:
Swipe-through rate
Time viewed
Overall engagement
…and ultimately increases the chance of landing on the Explore page.
Why I Often Use All 20 Slides
Instagram allows up to 20 images in a carousel now – and I use that to my advantage. Twenty frames mean more time spent on the post, more curiosity, more swiping, and more opportunities to deliver value.
The key isn’t just showing more photos. The key is showing photos that the viewer actually wants to swipe for.
If you can hook them visually, educate them, surprise them or inspire them, you win.
Final Thoughts
Everything I’ve shared here is simply what has worked extremely well for me. Instagram changes constantly, audiences differ and results can vary. But the fundamentals – value, clarity, curiosity, and strong first impressions – seem to stay effective no matter what.
If you approach each post with intention instead of guessing, your engagement has a much better chance of growing.
